All Natural/Clean Living How To’s: It’s Not As Hard As It May Seem

I’ll admit. The last thing I imagined myself doing at 9 o’clock at night last night was sitting on my husband’s lap with an ear candle in my ear. In fact, 2 years ago I would have laughed at myself. I am still not even sure if it worked, but it was a pretty cool experience nonetheless.

That’s the fun thing about this natural/clean living journey- experiencing different things to see which ones work for our family and to see which ones don’t. I decided two years ago that I would start paying more attention to labels on the food we bought and that we would eat at home more because I wasn’t sure where our food was being sourced from in restaurants. Those two small conscious decisions brought us to where I was last night. Sitting with a candle in my ear praying that I could get some relief for how clogged it was. It worked, but it was temporary, so I’ll try something else tonight. See, you never stop learning or trying new things. Exhibit A.

This journey will look different for us all because each of our families are so unique. That means that not one way is right and not one way is wrong. I am not a doctor, I am not a nurse. I am just a mom who started to say “no” to certain things, so I could say “yes” to better alternatives.

 

 

I became so passionate about this in 2016 when my health took the worst plummet it ever has. I don’t know what happened, but when it happened.. it was quick. One day I was fine, the next I was not. I was in and out of the hospital for unexplained liver enzyme issues, I had constant reoccurring UTI’s with multiple rounds of antibiotics. I had joint pain and the worst fatigue I had ever experienced. My happiness started to spiral and I was in a very dark place mentally. It’s crazy how a blow to your health can reveal that it might’ve been an idol you worshipped the entire time, amirite. Whoa. I don’t mean to sit here and say that we shouldn’t be health conscious because I definitely think it’s important to take care of your body. BUT, when you treat it like crap and glorify the fact that you can “eat whatever you want” without repercussions, that’s when things get a little tricky. This was me. That was my mindset and it was not a healthy one. And when my health started to show signs of wear and tear for all of the not-so-great decisions I had made over the years, I knew it was time to make a change.

The common misconception with living a healthy or natural lifestyle is that there is only ONE way to do it, which isn’t true. The other lie is that is has to be overwhelming, which also isn’t true. The truth is that it’s those small decisions that we can say “no” to, so we can say “yes” to a better alternative. For us, we probably planned a date night and decided what this would look like for us. We started simple: Eat more from home. This actually was my favorite yes. Because I love sitting around the table with my families in the evenings and eating a meal I’ve cooked for them. The other things we said a conscious “no” to were no longer using toxic cleaners in our home. That mean’t, no more clorox. But yes to essential oils and their magic. Let me be clear here. I have never sold essential oils, I have never worked for any of the companies out there. I just believe in them this much. We specifically use Young Living’s Thieves Household Cleaner. Other things we changed were the diapers/wipes we were willing to use on our children. This decision came after months of battling the worst diaper rash a baby girl can have. We finally settled on Honest diapers and Seventh Generation. The wipes we swear by at Water Wipes. And don’t be fooled by the name. These wipes can clean up the meanest of blow out’s, trust me from experience 😉 (yay parenthood). We also decided that BEFORE medicine, we would always try natural first. That mean’t that when our daughter had a terrible yeast infection that we tried everything under the sun to clear it up. Let it be known, that yeast infections are usually a result of Candida Overgrowth. After trying everything medically we could for her and it not working, we decided a change in diet and FemiClear would be worth a try. Now looking back, I wish I would have tried natural to begin with because this was the answer all along. The only thing that worked on breaking a 4 month long yeast infection.

Don’t get me wrong here. We are still very much human. We still make choices to give our “yes” to the thing that isn’t the best alternative and that’s the beauty of this journey. You don’t realize how much this is changing you and making you feel better, until you slip up and indulge in something that probably wasn’t the best for you and you end up feeling it later. I’ve been there M A N Y of times. One of the way’s I used to indulge the most was when I was pregnant. Knowing that if my body ever needed it to be the healthiest it was because I was also providing life for a growing human. Instead, I would feed myself the lie that I could say “yes” to these cravings that had the most terrible ingredients in them: hello, high fructose corn syrup, red 40, blue 1, etc etc. You get the picture here. It was bad. And that’s what I was providing for the unborn child in my stomach. I have a feeling alot of us pregnant mamas might also do the same thing. However, this time. I’ve found myself saying “no” to the crap, so I can say “yes” to a better alternative. For me, it looked like this:

– No to Swedish Fish and Yes to Smart Sweet’s Swedish Fish

-No to Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup’s and YES to Unreal’s Peanut Butter Cups.

Simple things like this, make such a HUGE impact in the grand scheme of things. The realization that you have options out there when it comes to what you eat and managing your health is POWERFUL!

We now went from aimlessly grabbing the cheapest toothpaste the store had on sale that week, to looking at the ingredients first, doing a quick google search and then re-evaluating our best “yes”. It’s these simple small choices, that are the easiest to be aware of and their the ones with the most impact. We don’t have to complicate this journey, we can take it on as quickly or slowly as we need to.

Lastly, I just want to leave you with some must have’s for our “Medicine Cabinet” that we have found SUPER helpful and that after 2 years of use, I can honestly say that I stand behind 100%:

CBD (perfect for sleep in place of melatonin, trick is finding the right one for you. this one is the only one that works for me and I’ve tried a few)

And what I believe we can do to exercise our “better yes”:

Limiting Sugar Intake

If it’s against the Halloween Candy or Aunt Bertha’s pie, I think Aunt Bertha should win. And that’s not just because her dough was homemade and probably tastes like unicorn glitter. But because if I have to exercise my “best yes”, you better believe I can hold off from the candy and indulge in the pie.

See, we don’t have to say no to everything. We GET TO say “no” to some things to say yes to the “better” thing. See how simple this is. This is how easily is starts, friends. There’s no magic formula, it really is THIS easy.

No High Fructose Corn Syrup

They know it’s not good for us, but they still allow it in food anyways. That’s got to make you think right. It also has to make you realize that only YOU can be an advocate for your healthy and the health of your family. Because we surely don’t have other’s looking our for our best intentions. Instead, say “yes” to honey, cane sugar, stevia. These alternatives are so much safer an better for our bodies. I want you to go into your kitchen right now. Open your refrigerator and look at the ingredients list on your ketchup. I can guarantee that you didn’t even realize it had HFCS in it. I didn’t when I looked at mine either. I was SHOCKED. Something as simple as the ketchup my kids like to dip their fries into was quickly chucked into the trash. I ran to the store and found one without it and knew that was my “better yes”. Its these small decisions, I’m telling you.
